Mining of soil and bedrock
Mining is one of the main forms of primary production. It is all about extracting valuable ores and minerals from the soil and the bedrock. When the ore has been extracted, it is then taken to a refinery and refined into pure minerals. After that these pure minerals are taken to different industry sectors.
There are industrial mining activities in South America, Eastern Asia, Russia and Scandinavia. One of the world's largest copper mines is the Chuquicamata mine in Chile.
In Finland, mining activities are found for example in Kemi, Nivala, Kittilä, Pyhäjärvi and Siilinjärvi. The oldest ore mine in Finland is in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa in Pyhäjärvi. Construction work of the mine began in 1959 and the mine was opened for industrial work in 1962. The mine's name is Pyhäsalmi mine. Sink, copper, gold and sulfur are being mined there.
In the future mining is going to be needed more, because people's usage of different kinds of metals continues to go up. Mining is starting to be found more in Africa, because there are a lot of workers and natural resources.
Mining produces a lot of pollution and the pollution should not be let into waters, like many mines do. This happens especially in places like South Africa. Waste from the mines pollute and degrade the enviroment rapidly and that's why it should be stored and taken some place where it won't affect the enviroment negatively.
